About my work:

Parallel to our pursuit of truth, we tear apart chaotic conceptions of the world in order to build them up into a structured reality.  Within this system of control, I question where the individual lies in their perceptions of the self.  Poststructuralist Judith Butler maintains that “personal identity – the sense that there are answers to the questions ‘who am I? and ‘what am I like?’, - is an illusion.”  The idea that our minds create illusion as a means to realization is one of uncertainty.  Yet we can view the inconsistencies in human perceptions and notions of truth as forming a shape to life; an ebb and flow analogous to that of nature.  After all, I hardly see humans- with our many flaws- as the tower of knowledge or strength that we sometimes think we are.

Katie Lewandowski

Name: Katie Lewandowski
Major: Art Education and Studio Art
Year: Senior
Sign: Libra

Recently my work has been focusing on the transparency of memory and how moments of our past that have been captured through photograph are just the description of a moment but not the reality of it. A fleeting gesture captured by film is just a seconds worth of information. What was happening during the immediate past and present of that period in time is unknown and ultimately considered by myself scattered moments of fiction. I utilize family photographs, past and present, to represent a seemingly significant moment in time, but use the paint to alter and describe the moment as i see it, a moment of fiction. I question the relevancy of the photographic information and attempt to reiterate through paint my beliefs in regards to the transparent quality of memory.

Kiley Van Note

Name: Kiley T. Van Note
Major: Studio, Concentration in Painting
Year: 5th Year Senior
Sign: Pisces

I have always been fascinated by people and their stories. So this semester, my current body of work is based on my father's side of the family. Growing up, I became accustomed to two different cultures: middle-class American customs and traditional Vietnamese customs. This left me with an interesting perspective on how the two cultures relate and how they differentiate. To show this, I have decided to focus on two characters in my family: my father as well as my grandmother (his mother). My hope is to show the viewer day to day events that take place in their lives now and how these customs of traditional Vietnamese values have adapted to Western civilization.

mixed feelings.

The painting lab is located on 3rd floor of applied arts on campus. This is where we reside most of the time. A home away from home so to speak. Except in here, we mix paint, apply and repeat.
Welcome.
